Brumble’s big adventure: A bullish journey of creativity, community and charity

This year, Birmingham Day Nurseries excitedly joined the Bulls in the City trail – a vibrant public art initiative by Wild in Art and Birmingham Hospice. Our mission was to raise £1,000 for the hospice by adopting a bull calf and bringing our nursery community together in a creative way.
From Baldy to Brumble
Back in the spring, excitement filled the air as each nursery hosted a launch event featuring Baldy the calf, accompanied by John from Birmingham Hospice and his mascot friend, Hettie. They shared the story behind the trail and inspired our children, families, and staff to get involved.
We invited everyone to contribute ideas for our calf’s design, and the response was incredible. Overflowing with creativity, the children’s visions were brought to life by one of our talented nursery assistants from The Oaks. Once the artwork was complete, a vote was held to name our calf… and Brumble was born.
Brumble’s debut and summer adventures
Brumble made his glamorous debut in May, complete with a trail app photoshoot and a plaque that read:
‘Brumble celebrates Birmingham’s vibrant spirit, blending landmarks like the iconic clock tower with buzzing bees, chocolate and lush green parks. Bursting with colour, nature and local pride, Brumble invites you to explore the city’s creativity and charm – one hoof step at a time. Spot the rainbow and let the imagination run wild!’
Brumble’s summer home was The Little Highstreet play café in Harborne, which offered discounted entry for our nursery families throughout the trail, running from mid-July to mid-September.

Community, creativity and charity
Throughout the summer, our nurseries hosted a range of fun-filled fundraising events. From bunny hops and bake sales, to picnics, and swap shops. Thanks to the incredible support from our families and staff, we’ve already raised over £2,000, doubling our original target.
But we’re not stopping there…
Next stop: The Reindeer Run
This December, we’re going big with the Birmingham Hospice Reindeer Run. Our nurseries are buzzing with ideas to make it magical, think antlers, reindeer food making, hoof printing, festive hunts, and a winter ramble through Winterbourne Gardens.
We’re so proud to be part of a project that not only supports a vital local charity but also brings our nursery community together in such a joyful way. It’s a reminder of the power of imagination, collaboration, and giving back.
